CUSTOM TIES STARTED OFF AS CRAVATS PART 3

In part one we spoke about the history of cravats, how they originated and morphed into custom ties. in part 2 I will discuss more of the history and some of the the psychology behind custom ties or cravats as they were called in those days.

In part 3, I would like to discuss the way in which cravats were made in the 1700’s compared to how custom ties are made or manufactured by tie makers or tie manufacturers these days.

The process has certainly come a long way and is far more refined than ever before.

So back in the 1700’s when a strip of fabric was used- probably some form of cotton or linen as there were very few options for fabric back in those days.

The croat soldier, most likely a senior individual or officer within the ranks would have most likely approached a fabric dyer or perhaps a merchant and discussed with them a specific or particular shade that they wanted the fabric to be dyed, unless of course, they had enough in stock which was then an ideal situation as things would certainly go quicker.

I would imagine that the shade was either agreed upon by the members of that particular unit or brigade or perhaps if the office in charge was more autocratic and not open to debate which was likely the case, then the appointed or perhaps self appointed individual would take it upon themselves to source this fabric that could then be torn into strips in order to  make up their so called custom ties.

One must keep in mind that back in those days, although I am sure scissors had been invented, it was probably unlikely that this is what was used to convert the fabric into strips simply because carrying a pair of scissors into battle was not exactly the best idea.

And so, I would imagine that sharp knives were used to cut the initial part of the fabric and from there, but hand, the strips would be torn.

So one can well imagine that these custom ties or cravats were extremely basic and roughly made simply to suit the purpose.

I would wonder also, if a member of the croat group was killed on the battlefield, would they leave the strip of fabric around his neck to continue to identify it or remove it to give to someone still alive. Back then, there would be no wastage- boots etc would all be recycled and given to the next man to wear.

So the cravats or custom ties would be roughly made specifically for a purpose, not for fashion but for unity and recognition and the general sense of belonging that custom ties tend to promote these days albeit if the form of different types of custom ties such a s corporate ties or club ties or company ties or even promotional ties and school ties such as matric ties.
